The World Network of Island and Coastal Biosphere Reserves (WNICBR), was founded to develop a global mechanism including research programs to effectively respond to emerging challenges, in accordance with the Madrid Action Plan. In 2009, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and Spain Menorca together suggested the idea for WNICBR during the 21st International Co-ordinating Council Man and Biosphere(MAB-ICC). The 22st MAB-ICC approved the proposed establishment. In June 2011 in Dresden, Germany, representatives from UNESCO, Spain and Jeju reached anagreement to work together. The founding ceremony was held at Minorca, Spain, in February 2012, where it was decided that Jeju and Minorca would take joint responsibility in managing the Secretariat Office.

    • Essential Particulars : Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park (1993) and Underground River(1999) were inscribed as World Natural Heritage Sites
